Setting the scene…
Tranmere Rovers are back in action on Saturday when they make the long trip down to Devon for a League Two fixture at Exeter City.
Unbeaten in four games, Micky Mellon’s side head to St James Park in buoyant mood following on from Saturday’s 1-0 home win over Notts County at Prenton Park, as Connor Jennings’ goal lifted TRFC to within two points of the Play-Offs.
Standing in Rovers’ way are Matt Taylor’s Grecians, who are fifth in the division after a 1-1 draw at league leaders Lincoln City on Tuesday night.
Team news
Steve McNulty, Liam Ridehalgh and Harvey Gilmour have all returned to training of late so can be considered available for selection for Saturday. Ishmael Miller will be at the Club on Monday before heading to St.Georges Park to step up his rehab for his injury.
The Grecians season so far
With the end of the League Two season in sight, Exeter will be hoping to consolidate a Play-Off spot and mount a late push for an automatic promotion position.
It was a summer of change for the St James Park side, who saw Paul Tisdale depart the club after over a decade as manager.
The man tasked with succeeding Tisdale was Chorley-born Taylor, who represented the club from 2007-2011, making 160 league appearances.
This term, from their 34 matches played, Exeter have won 15, drawn 10 and lost nine, leaving them six points off the top three.
One to watch
With two goals from his last two games, forward Matt Jay will be looking to continue his recent good form on Saturday.
Scoring key strikes in recent fixtures away at Crewe Alexandra and Lincoln, Jay is a product of the club’s academy system, coming through the ranks to sign his first professional deal in 2013.
Born in Torbay, Devon, the 23-year-old made his first-team debut for Exeter in September 2013 during a 2-0 defeat to Wycombe Wanderers in the EFL Trophy.
Loans to non-league sides Weston-Super-Mare, Hayes and Yeading United and Truro City followed before he became a regular in Exeter’s team last season.
He turned out 23 times last term and has since gone on to make a further 17 this campaign, scoring twice in his last two matches.
