Miller delighted with debut victory

12 January 2019

Tranmere Rovers’ newest recruit Ishmael Miller was delighted with his debut goal after a spirited second half performance earned a 3-1 Rovers victory away against Cheltenham Town.

The Robins took the lead late in the first half through Luke Varney, but three goals in the second period from James Norwood, Miller and Ollie Banks proved enough to bring all three points back home.

Speaking to the media after the game, Miller said: “Obviously it’s great to get a debut goal, to get yourself settled in quicker than if you don’t score, but it’s the result that’s the main thing and we’ll just try and have a positive couple of weeks.

“The one where it's coming and it’s gone through the guy’s legs, usually if it’s on target it goes in that one, and there was one in the first half when Nors just popped me through, I took a touch and the keepers made a good save to be fair, but usually I would have taken that one. I was a bit disappointed about that but great to get a goal and get on the score sheet personally.”

Miller’s new forward partnership with Norwood showed signs of promise and he feels that he has a good understanding with Rovers’ top goal scorer.

He added: “He’s scored bag fulls of goals this season, he’s been on fire and it's great to play with a player who is obviously in the height of confidence, and I’m going to try and help him as best as I possibly can and he’s going to help me as much as he possible can for myself. We had a great understanding in the first week in training, so it looks something that is quite exciting.”

The Englishman also praised another new January signing David Perkins who he has played with before earlier in his career.

“Perks is a top, top player, I think he’s 36 now. He’s a top player I played with him at Blackpool, looks like he’s 16 again. He’s fit as a fiddle, he’s played so many games and he’s a top top guy, top player. I’ve played with him before and knew him for a long time.

“It’s great to obviously have him at the club, as soon as I knew he was signing I was excited when I spoke to the manager about it and Jacko. So yes it was a great result, positive result, so let’s look forward to the next couple of weeks and try to get a couple more wins under our belt.”

Miller was also full of admiration for the travelling Super White Army and he is keen for the side to start picking up some more points away from home.

“It was great to obviously get a positive result for them, we know it’s a long drive and long trip away, spending Saturday away and coming to watch the lads. It’s great to get a result for the fans and for everyone involved in the club.

“The manager said that to us this week before we started the game to try and get some more points away from home and get some more wins. I was lucky to get promoted a few times and that’s what gets you there and there about at the end, picking up some wins and some vital wins on the road and some vital points on the road, it makes a big difference.”
