St John Plessington proudly represent TRFC in EFL Girls Cup

16 January 2019

St. John Plessington travelled to Stoke City on Tuesday 10th January to represent Tranmere Rovers in the EFL Girls Cup (U13) – Northern Regional Finals.

Back in November, St. John Plessington faced 15 other schools in a battle to represent Tranmere Rovers in the EFL Girls Cup.

Nine other football clubs were competing for a place in the Northern Regional Final with the dream of playing at Wembley in the Checkatrade Trophy Final.

In a hard-fought tournament, Plessington went on to play Weatherhead in what was a very close final. They held out for a 2 – 1 win showing great defensive work right until the final whistle.

The winning girls recently travelled to Stoke City, were they were placed in Group One along with Port Vale, Shrewsbury Town, Aston Villa and Crewe Alexandra. The top of the group would go on to play in the final versus the team that finished top of Group Two.

Up first the girls faced Port Vale. They fought hard in what was a tough first game but unfortunately lost three goals to nil.

Not losing their fighting spirit the girls bounced back from this defeat with some spectacular football and went onto win their next three games, scoring an impressive 13 goals and conceding only three.

The girls battled hard with great attacking football with the defending to match in all their games. The standard of football from all teams involved was extremely high and we saw some impressive football throughout the tournament.

This unfortunately was not enough for St. John Plessington to qualify for a place in the final as Port Vale topped the group winning all 4 games and went on to play West Brom in the final.

Although they narrowly missed out on victory, the girls enjoyed their day and Tranmere Rovers would like to thank them for representing us and for all their hard work during the tournament.

We would like to wish the winners the best of luck in the remainder of the tournament and look forward to entering the cup again next season.
