Tranmere Rovers manager Micky Mellon has insisted that his side are not getting carried away despite their five-straight wins in League Two, and that the focus is taking it one game at a time ahead of Saturday’s trip to Oldham Athletic.
Fifth-placed Rovers moved to within four points of the automatic promotion places in the fourth-tier following Tuesday’s emphatic 4-1 home victory over Grimsby Town at Prenton Park.
Mellon takes his men to Boundary Park this weekend aiming for a sixth successive three points, where Paul Scholes’ Oldham lie in wait in Greater Manchester.
And Mellon says that feet are firmly on the ground and it is all about taking it one match at a time, as preparations continue for the fixture away at the Latics.
Mellon said: “It has been a good spell of results at the minute, but we know the hard work that it has taken to do that, and we must keep up the intensity of the performances and the focus and all the rest of it because they are really important.
“If we start to believe anything other than it was just pure hard work and good preparation, then we will be in a bit of trouble.
“I think just experience generally, I think through football. I’ve been in it nearly 30-odd years now, so you just get to a stage where you know that’s what it takes to get ready for a game of football, that’s just the way it is.
“Probably at this stage of the season, you know the games are ticking down and your focus probably narrows, and you know with games ticking down now, how important that they are, because we are in to single figures now, every game.
“It is just about concentrating, honestly it is just concentrating on today, getting ourselves ready for tomorrow and then preparing for the game on Saturday and that’s how we honestly do it, we don’t think too far ahead and we don’t really think behind apart from where we can learn and move forward, and that is the honest truth.
“I think it is important that we keep reins on things, and I know that getting excited is for everybody who is not performing, we have to make sure we really slow things down and we don’t think any further than getting the players ready.
“We’ll take it one game at a time and then we will have to go out and perform against Oldham on Saturday to the levels that we have been.”
