Preview: Grimsby Town

11 March 2019

Setting the scene…

Tranmere Rovers return to Prenton Park aiming for a fifth straight League Two victory against Grimsby Town on Tuesday night, 7:45pm kick-off.

Micky Mellon’s side are up to fifth in the fourth-tier after James Norwood’s 26th goal of the season earned a hard-fought 1-0 home victory over Crewe Alexandra under the lights on Friday night.

Grimsby make the trip to the Wirral having suffered a 2-1 defeat at Crawley Town on Saturday, with the Mariners dropping down to 15th in the division.

Team news
Zoumana Bakayogo limped out of Friday's win against Crewe and it is not yet known if he will be available for Tuesday's match. Ishmael Miller remains on the sidelines for TRFC.

The Mariners’ season so far
It has been a stable season for Michael Jolley’s Grimsby side, who are comfortably in mid-table heading in to the closing months of the campaign.

Currently winless in three outings ahead of their visit to Prenton Park, the Lincolnshire outfit had recently gone on a five-match unbeaten run at the turn of the New Year to climb the league table.

And they collected 12 points from a possible 15 back in December, which saw Jolley win the League Two Manager of the Month award for December.

From their 36 games played to date, Grimsby have won 14, drawn five and lost 17, with the Blundell Park club nine points from the Play-Offs.

One to Watch
Experienced forward Wes Thomas leads the way at the top of Grimsby’s goal charts this season.

The 32-year-old from Barking, London, began his career with Waltham Forest, Thurrock and Fisher Athletic before going on to represent Grays Athletic and Rushden & Diamonds prior to earning a move to Cheltenham Town in 2010.

Scoring 18 goals in one season at Whaddon Road, Thomas would later go on to play for Crawley Town, AFC Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Blackpool, Rotherham United, Birmingham City, Swindon Town, Bradford City and Oxford United.

Thomas signed for Grimsby last summer and has scored 12 goals for Jolley’s men.
