Micky looking for consistency on Sunday

15 November 2019

Tranmere Rovers manager Micky Mellon expects a “different type of challenge” when his side host Wycombe Wanderers at Prenton Park in Sky Bet League One on Sunday lunchtime, 12pm kick-off.

Gareth Ainsworth’s promotion chasing Chairboys visit the Wirral for a Sky Sports televised fixture, eight days on from an Emirates FA Cup first-round tie which finished 2-2.

The two teams will also meet for a third game in next Wednesday night’s replay at Adams Park.

Speaking during his press conference to the local media on Friday, Mellon is looking forward to the challenge that awaits, and he says that Sunday is an opportunity to try and keep on moving forward.

Mellon said: “It is a different type of challenge, but we know the challenge, and we’re looking forward to it as we’re enjoying our football at the minute and we have to keep our consistency going forward, and get more clean sheets, we have to improve at that.

“We’ll continue to keep trying to move things forward and Sunday is another opportunity for us to do that.

“It will be a tough game. I like to keep football simple and I don’t want to sit here and complicate it.

“We have to be good and consistent on Sunday, and that is really what it is about.”

Sunday will see Tranmere play their first Sky Bet League One outing for 15 days, and the boss is pleased to see his squad building and improving, but he has called for more aggression in goal scoring positions.

Mellon added: “We’re building all of the time, there is a unit there, we have to work that unit forward and we will work forward from that game.

“I put a responsibility on everyone, we seem capable of getting goals. We need to score more from set-plays because the delivery is good, we need to be more aggressive about getting on the end of them, because a lot of games are decided on set-pieces, so we have to keep on making improvements moving forward and getting the results.”
