Rovers Rewind: Wycombe 2011

14 November 2019

For each fixture this season, we will take a trip down memory lane to recall a memorable Tranmere Rovers match against each of our Sky Bet League One opponents.

Gareth Ainsworth’s Wycombe are this afternoon’s visitors to Prenton Park, and we will rewind eight years to Saturday 17th September 2011.

Les Parry’s Rovers ran out 2-0 winners that autumnal afternoon, scoring in either half through strikes from Enoch Showunmi and Ash Taylor.

Current Chairboys boss Ainsworth played in the game on the Wirral that afternoon, as Rovers moved up to 10th position in English football’s third-tier with a comfortable triumph in front of the SWA.

Tranmere led inside the opening nine minutes of the encounter when Showunmi met Lucas Akins’ header to divert past goalkeeper Nikki Bull from close-range.

Elliott Benyon later forced Rovers stopper Owain Fon Williams into action as he thwarted the Wycombe man, as the visitors pushed to level the scores.

But Tranmere secured maximum points when Taylor headed John Welsh’s corner to seal the victory.

Tranmere would finish the 2011/12 season with a 12th placed finish, after Ronnie Moore returned to Prenton Park in March 2012.

TRFC: Williams, Goodison, Taylor, Buchanan, Rave, Welsh, Donaldson, (Bakayogo 70) Showunmi, McGurk, (Tyriaki 85) Akins
