Tranmere 2-2 Wycombe

9 November 2019

Kieron Morris’ double ensured Tranmere Rovers will face Wycombe Wanderers in an FA Cup first round replay after a 2-2 draw at Prenton Park on Saturday.

TRFC were ahead after three minutes through a low strike from midfielder Morris, on a cold and windswept Wirral afternoon.

Joe Jacobson equalised for Wycombe midway through the half, with a well-taken curled free-kick into the top corner.

Wycombe turned the game on its head nine minutes following the restart in the second-half courtesy of Alex Samuel.

Morris was on hand to level up the scores again on 66 minutes, firing into the bottom right-corner after good passing build-up play.

Manager Micky Mellon named an unchanged starting line-up to the side which won 3-1 away at MK Dons last weekend.

Forward Morgan Ferrier and midfielder Darren Potter returned from injury to take up places on the substitutes bench, while Stefan Payne was available for selection having served his one-match suspension.

Before kick-off, the two sets of players came together for a minute’s silence ahead of Remembrance Day, which was observed impeccably by the Prenton Park crowd.

Rovers started on the front foot, and inside two minutes, Morris crashed an effort off the base of the post before Connor Jennings saw his goal-bound strike cleared.

Morris wasn’t to be denied a minute later, as he gave Tranmere the lead in the cup tie, profiting from a set-piece situation to drive across goal from the left side of the penalty area, which found Ryan Allsop’s bottom right-corner.

Jennings went close shortly later, receiving a neat pass from Kane Wilson, though his curled attempt went wide of Allsop’s right-hand upright.

Gareth Ainsworth’s Chairboys were level through Jacobson’s left-footed free-kick, which he curled from in the ‘D’ and over the wall, beating Scott Davies with the ball dropping into the top right-corner.

Neil Danns unleashed a 25-yard attempt which didn’t trouble Allsop, while up the other end, Samuel shot wide from Jacobson’s cross.

Wycombe took the lead for the first time with 54 minutes on the clock, when Rovers failed to clear a lofted free-kick into the box, as Samuel pounced to drill left footed beyond Davies and into the bottom left-corner.

Morris’ second goal came in front of the Argyle Satellite Taxis Kop Stand in the closing 25 minutes of the clash.

Rovers’ number seven latched onto Jennings’ neat through ball to side-foot right-footed which zipped off the wet turf beyond Allsop and into the bottom right-corner.

Boss Mellon made a double change, with Ferrier coming on for last Saturday’s hat-trick hero Rushian Hepburn-Murphy, and Corey Blackett-Taylor replacing Jake Caprice in the final 20 minutes.

Searching for a winner, full-back Wilson went agonizingly close to adding a third, when he curled a shot with the outside of his right-boot, which went off target.

Late on, substitute Adebayo Akinfenwa glanced a cross over the crossbar prior to Davies doing well to tip over Darius Charles’ header.

A replay at Adams Park will now decide who makes it through to the Second-Round of the competition.

Next up for Mellon’s men is a Leasing.com Trophy Group C Northern section tie versus Salford City under the Prenton Park floodlights on Tuesday night, kick-off 7:45pm.

The replay against Ainsworth's men will be announced in due course.
