Micky looking forward to Friday night football

17 October 2019

Tranmere Rovers manager Micky Mellon has challenged his players to “keep on improving” ahead of Friday night’s Sky Bet League One fixture against Southend United at Prenton Park.

Rovers will be aiming for a second win in a row in the third-tier when they host the Shrimpers, kick-off 7:45pm.

And the boss wants his side to keep on getting better as they prepare for Friday night football under the floodlights.

Mellon said: “Everybody is looking for consistency and I think the important thing is to not believe we have got anywhere close to where we want to get to. We want to make sure that everyone, players and staff, understands that we have to keep improving.

“We want to get better all the time. We want to keep getting better and of course we want consistency and good performances from the players as that will give us a good chance of getting results in games.

“We probably have to be a bit careful in saying we are where we want to be yet. We have had a couple of decent results and on the whole there have been some really good performances so we want to keep improving all the time and I want us to keep getting better.

“All games in this level for us are very difficult and we know how hard we have got to work. We’ve watched a lot of Southend and we know that they have some good players and it will be a difficult game so we will have to be at our best in order to try and get a really, really important result under the lights on Friday night.”

Friday night football returns to Prenton Park for the first time this campaign, and Mellon knows that the support that Rovers will receive from the SWA will be important.

He added: “We know what it is going to be like on a Friday night, we know that the atmosphere will be absolutely electric at Prenton Park.

“The crowd are creating a culture here, they are becoming a part of what we do, and they know that they have an important part to play in everything that we do, knowing what their share of the performance is.

“It’s a great relationship at the minute. it is a very together Club and we are enjoying that, we are in a good place as a Football Club, we just have to keep facing forward, keep on improving and always understand what all our parts are in a performance, in moving this fantastic Club forward.”
