Rovers Rewind: Southend United 2009

17 October 2019

For each fixture this season, we will take a trip down memory lane to recall a Tranmere Rovers match against each of our Sky Bet League One opponents.

Southend United are tonight’s visitors to Prenton Park for a Friday night football clash under the floodlights.
And for our Flashback this week, we will take you back 10-years to 23rd November 2009 when Rovers, then managed by Les Parry, beat the Shrimpers  2-0 at home in front of the SWA.

Rovers led within 10 minutes played when captain Ian Goodison headed them in front following on from a corner.

The visitors from Essex went close on goal through Sean Morrison before Rovers goalkeeper Luke Daniels was forced to thwart Adam Barrett’s effort.

Three-points were secured for Tranmere in the League One encounter, through Terry Gornell’s 72nd minute goal from a tight angle.

It was a comfortable victory for TRFC, who ended a run of five defeats on the spin with a win and a clean-sheet.
Rovers went onto avoid relegation from the third-tier that term by a point, collecting 51 points as they finished 19th in the table.

TRFC: Daniels, Logan, Goodison, (McLaren 64) Broomes, Bakayogo, Edds, Welsh, Taylor, Gornell, Shuker, (Moore 75) Curran
