Flashback: Gillingham 2000

6 September 2019

For each fixture this season, we will take a trip down memory lane to recall a Tranmere Rovers match against each of our Sky Bet League One opponents.

Taking you back to August 2000, and a memorable meeting when Rovers ran out 3-2 winners against the men from Kent.

Gillingham travelled up to Prenton Park for Tranmere's first home game of the campaign in the Football League First Division.

Tranmere were in front inside three minutes through Wayne Gill, who steered in a header.

Rovers got another goal, their second in eight minutes, courtesy of Sean Flynn.

Alan Morgan turned away from Nicky Southall and delivered a sublime cross into the box for the midfielder to glance home and extend Tranmere's lead to 2-0.

The Gills managed to pull one back through Carl Asaba, but Tranmere weren't done yet.

An excellently executed free-kick by Clint Hill once again gave Rovers a two goal advantage in front of their own support.

Southall's penalty gave Gillingham some hope of a comeback, but John Aldridge's side get their first home win and their first three points of the season.
