Micky insists on 'high tempo' for Oxford game

13 September 2019

Tranmere Rovers manager Micky Mellon feels that his side have reached the “tempo” needed to compete in Sky Bet League One ahead of Saturday afternoon’s fixture away at Oxford United.

Rovers are unbeaten in two outings in the third-tier, and head to the Kassam Stadium, where Karl Robinson’s U’s await.

Scotsman Mellon, 47, is pleased to see that his players are adapting to a division that the Club have not graced since 2014.

Mellon said: “We have worked hard all this week on all of the things that we know will have to in order to be competitive in League One and it is good to know that the boys will fight, and the crowd will get right behind them.

“The tempo that we are asking them to play at, the aggression that we are asking them to play and it has been coming for a while because we know that they all can play but we need to be able to hit League One levels and intensity for longer.

“You see the levels of performance have grown but now it is about consistency and hitting those levels of intensity all the time, that you show that responsibility to the team and you get the job done pretty much since the start of the season.

“I think the players are getting used to working at those levels for longer in the games, but it has to be consistent and they have to be prepared from the first whistle to go and perform like that.

“It is about working hard and leaving no stone unturned and we want to set out to be a competitive 46-game stable League One team.

“For long spells in games we have been showing the necessary characteristics in order to try and get results and we have been showing that for a while now and we have seen in long parts that there is evidence that we have started to improve.

“We always say if we get the performance right, the scoreline will take care of itself and we are getting better, and we have seen that. We just have to be consistent about it and to go and attack it with the qualities needed to go out and try and get results.”
