Micky proud after Peterborough performance

18 September 2019

Tranmere Rovers manager Micky Mellon was proud after his side came back from 2-0 down to earn a 2-2 home draw against Peterborough United at Prenton Park on Tuesday night.

Rovers found themselves trailing through quick-fire second-half strikes from Mo Eisa and Ivan Toney which sent Darren Ferguson’s Posh ahead.

But Mellon’s men roared back to earn a point with two goals in five minutes.

Firstly, Liam Ridehalgh’s diving header from Darren Potter’s cross halved the deficit before Ollie Banks’ 30-yard thumping volley which found the bottom left-corner sealed a spirited point.

And Scotsman Mellon hailed the display of his battling players to earn a draw in front of the SWA.

Mellon said: “Talking over the whole performance, I thought we were keen, like we always are, as we are a very proud Football Club and want to make sure we represent Tranmere properly and we give the fans something worthwhile to come and watch and we have had a few years waiting for night’s like this.

“We have run toe-to-toe with a Peterborough team who cost a fortune compared to our boys. We have got quality and we have got lads who want to improve, and we know and keep saying that it is a development job.

“When we are determined to hit the tempo of a game, we are a match for anybody, which was important for me and the performance. I felt even at 2-0 down we were still so much in the game and the Tranmere fans can see that the lads gave everything and they knew that it was harsh that we found ourselves two down.

“They stuck with us and we came roaring back and we always felt if we could get that goal, the momentum would be with us and we knew that we could get back into this because it is a special place to play, under the lights at Prenton Park.

“I think all in all it was a fantastic night of football that we have worked so hard to work for and deliver for the people of the Wirral to try and give them a Football Club to be proud of who can go toe-to-toe under the lights.”
