Rovers Rewind - Peterborough 2005

16 September 2019

For each fixture this season, take a trip down memory lane to recall a Tranmere Rovers match against each of our Sky Bet League One opponents.

Peterborough United are Tuesday night's visitors to Prenton Park for a Sky Bet League One encounter under the floodlights on the Wirral.

In March 2005, with both sides competing in the third-tier, Rovers put on a five-star display in front of their own supporters.

Tranmere were in front when a punt from goalkeeper John Achterberg was flicked on by Iain Hume into the path of Paul Hall on 16 minutes, converting right-footed from inside the penalty area.

Hume got on the score sheet himself just before the half hour when he powered Theo Whitmore’s cross into the top corner beyond goalkeeper Mark Tyler.

And Tranmere made it three on a spring Friday night when Hume chested down Gareth Roberts’ flighted pass from the left to the on-rushing Jason McAteer, who drove the ball which found the bottom right-corner in the 45th minute.

Whitmore added a fourth for Brian Little’s men on the hour, finishing off a well-worked passing move to drill low left-footed past Tyler.

A fifth goal came through Hall with 10 minutes to play, as the forward beat three defenders to net a fine solo strike which curled into Tyler’s bottom corner.

Rovers went onto finish third in the division that year, just missing out on automatic promotion before losing in the Play-Offs.
