Micky calling for consistency ahead of Fleetwood

27 February 2020

Tranmere Rovers manager Micky Mellon has challenged his players to continue improving, as they prepare for the visit of Fleetwood Town to Prenton Park on Saturday afternoon.

Mellon’s men will be going for a second straight win in Sky Bet League One when Joey Barton brings his in-form Cod Army to the Wirral, kick-off 3pm.

Tranmere reduced the gap to safety in the third-tier to five points after a dramatic late 3-2 triumph away at Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday night, and Mellon wants to see the level of performance continued.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Micky had his say on the upcoming fixture against Fleetwood.

Mellon said: “It’s good that we got our reward for our good work, but now it is back to training and back to hard work, and that we hit these levels all of the time.

“There is still a lot of things that we need to improve, but we are a squad who have always worked hard and showed good character.

“We need to continue to keep working hard on the things that will give us a better chance of winning games, and that is clean sheets, getting first goals and showing the characteristics you need to win games at this level.

“I firmly believe if I keep trying to improve the players and keep working on the things that improve performance, then the results will come.

“We are starting to hit and go above those levels, we just have to do it consistently now, and I’m sure if we keep turning in those performances, the results will keep coming.”

Mellon is looking forward to coming up against his former club, with the Fylde Coast outfit currently sitting seventh, a point and a place from the Play-Offs.

Mellon added: “I know what a competitive game it will be, it will be a good game and it will be a tough game.

“We’ll look forward to another tough game but a good, competitive game and try and win another three-points.”
