Clarke becomes first January signing!

1 January 2020

Tranmere Rovers can today confirm the signing of experienced defender Peter Clarke from Fleetwood Town.

Clarke becomes Micky Mellon’s first signing of the January transfer window and has featured 17 times so far for the Cod Army this season and just last Sunday, helped Joey Barton's side keep a clean sheet against Bristol Rovers in League One.

Starting his career at Everton, his former clubs include Blackpool, Oldham Athletic Huddersfield Town and Southend United. He led Huddersfield Town to promotion from League One as captain in 2012. Clarke will be available for selection for this weekend's FA Cup third round tie at Premier League side Watford.

Speaking about his new recruit, Mellon said: "We’re really pleased to bring Peter to the Club. We needed to add experience to the defence. He’s an organiser and a leader and he has great ability too. More than anything, he’s a winner and a top professional.

“We need to concede less and keep more clean sheets which we believe he can help us do with his experience. I’m delighted to have him on board."
Clarke, who has scored three goals for Fleetwood Town this season, has made more than 700 career appearances, and completed the full 90 minutes in his last three games for the Lancashire side.

He said:
"I'm really happy and I'm looking forward to getting started. I'm honest, hardworking, I wear my heart on my sleeve and I will leave everything out there on the pitch.

"I
spoke to the manager and we had a long chat about what he wants at the Club and what is already in place. It’s now time that we progress and move forward."
