Match Preview: Manchester United

25 January 2020

Setting the scene…

Tranmere Rovers host 12-time Emirates FA Cup winners’ Manchester United in the competition’s fourth-round at Prenton Park on Sunday afternoon, kick-off 3pm.

The fixture will be broadcast live on BT Sport, as Micky Mellon’s men welcome Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Red Devils to the Wirral.

Paul Mullin’s 104th minute winner in extra-time secured a 2-1 third-round replay victory over Premier League outfit Watford on Thursday night, which was played in front of over 10,000 packed into Prenton Park.

Solskjaer’s side reached this stage after Juan Mata’s goal earned a 1-0 triumph against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford in their replay last Wednesday.

Team news

Ollie Banks, Mark Ellis and Evan Gumbs are all out of action through injuries.

Alex Woodyard is cup-tied for Sunday having already represented Peterborough United in the competition.

Kane Wilson is eligible for selection after re-signing on loan from West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

One to watch

Midfielder Nemanja Matic was recruited by Manchester United in July 2017, for £40m from Chelsea.

The Serbia international started his professional path with FC Koscie before moving to Chelsea in 2009, making two league appearances and spending loan time at Dutch outfit Vitesse.

Matic left Chelsea permanently in 2011, penning a switch to Portuguese giants Benfica, winning a league and cup title in Lisbon.

He re-signed for Chelsea for £21m in January 2014, turning out on 151 occasions in West London – clinching two Premier League winners’ medals.

Matic moved to Old Trafford in 2017 and he has made over 100 appearances.
