Micky looking for right mentality against Watford

13 January 2020

Tranmere Rovers manager Micky Mellon is looking forward to seeing his side test themselves against Premier League club Watford in Tuesday night’s Emirates FA Cup third-round replay at Prenton Park.

Rovers welcome Nigel Pearson’s Hornets to the Wirral for the 7:45pm kick-off after coming back from three goals down in the initial Vicarage Road tie.

And Mellon is excited ahead of the contest, with Rovers hosting a top-flight team in the third-round for the second season in a row.

Mellon said: “It’s the FA Cup. We know what the size of the prize is for the team that goes through so it’s everything to play for, and a big night for Tranmere which we’ll all enjoy being involved in.

“It’s just about keeping the players aligned with everything that’s needed in a performance, that’s all it is and when called upon that’s my job to do that.

“The players then went out and delivered and it’s all credit to them that they got back on track again and were able to perform the way they did in the second-half.

“They are capable of playing at that tempo with that kind of quality, but it is about consistency and doing that more and most of the time because you can see what a good group of players they are.

“There’s an awful lot riding on it but we won’t get too far ahead of ourselves. We have to respect the fact we are playing against a Premier League team. We know that it will be very, very difficult to knock Watford out.”

A home tie against either Manchester United or Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday 26th January awaits the winner of Tuesday’s game, and Mellon says it is important for the Club to enjoy the Watford occasion.

He added: “We have to have the right mentality and we have to make sure that we do everything that will be needed in to do that, but we are looking forward to it, they are terrific nights under the floodlights, and it is enjoying being back playing in these big games for Tranmere, and that is what the Club needs to be involved in.

“We know that we’ll have to be at our very, very best in order to get something from the game, and we’ll attack it. There has been a massive upturn in results for Watford since Nigel has come in, and he will have them fired up at Prenton Park.”
