Micky: We will leave everything on the pitch

25 January 2020

Tranmere Rovers manager Micky Mellon is looking forward to Sunday afternoon’s Emirates FA Cup fourth-round tie at home to Manchester United at Prenton Park, and he believes that the Wirral community will get behind the Club.

Rovers booked a clash with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Red Devils after Paul Mullin’s extra-time header beat Watford 2-1 in Thursday’s third-round replay in front of over 10,000.

And speaking to the press ahead of the game, Micky says that hosting United in front of the BT Sport cameras is “fantastic” for TRFC and the local area.

Mellon said: “For Tranmere to be able to welcome a club of that size and history to Prenton Park is fantastic for the whole area, the Football Club and everybody really, so it is a real tonic.

“It is something that we’ll relish and we’re really looking forward to and the whole of the Wirral will look forward to it.

“It’s obvious that Manchester United have got players of world class quality and what we go and believe, is in any game, if you get a lot of stuff right, you give yourself that chance.

“There’s always a chance in games of football and there are certain things you need to do in order to increase that chance which you have to do to make that bigger. So, if we do that, we’ll give ourselves an opportunity.

“But realistically we are going to have to get a hell of a lot right, but why not give it the best go that you can.

“You approach it knowing it’s a big game. You don’t have to tell the players that, they know that.

“We’ll get the players prepared the best we can and make sure that their mentality is right, and they take control of themselves and concern themselves what they need to do and do their jobs.”

Mellon is aware of what challenge will await them when United visit Birkenhead, but he feels his squad can represent the Club and the SWA and put in a performance.

He added: “The challenge is there against a top-class opposition so why not have a go at it. We have nothing to lose.

“We need to make sure we give it our best shot and leave nothing on that pitch and represent the fans and Tranmere Rovers the way that we know we can.”
