Tranmere Rovers Chairman Mark Palios welcomes Manchester United for classic FA Cup tie

25 January 2020

Chairman, Mark Palios, looks back to when top flight clubs recognised their roots within the football pyramid.

I would like to welcome the directors, staff, players and supporters of Manchester United to Prenton Park for Sunday’s Emirates FA Cup tie.

This is a huge game that our fans deserve against a club with great history and class. Manchester United’s class was never more evident than back in 1982 when a friendly was arranged against Tranmere to help raise vital funds that essentially helped the Club survive the financial difficulties at the time.

Currently with the majority of Premier League fans mooting for a more compacted FA Cup schedule to suit their own agenda, we must remember that back in 1982, Manchester United were the first club to come to our aid despite a heavy schedule.

We look forward to the match on Sunday and to what we hope will be a classic FA Cup encounter.

Mark Palios
