Woodyard back in contention for Sunderland clash

29 January 2020

Tranmere Rovers centre-midfielder Alex Woodyard feels that the recent Emirates FA Cup run will stand the Club in good stead for the rest of the Sky Bet League One season.

Micky Mellon’s men host Phil Parkinson’s in-form Black Cats under the Prenton Park lights on Wednesday night, as Rovers return to third-tier action.

Woodyard, 26, is currently on loan on the Wirral from Peterborough United, and speaking to the local press before the midweek clash, he offered his thoughts ahead of Sunderland’s visit.

Woodyard said: “The FA Cup was a great run and it was great for the Club, but the league is more important and it’s time that we concentrate now and start picking up wins.

“Games in hand are nice but at the same time you need to win those games, and there’s no better way to start than a big side in Sunderland.

“The boys can take confidence from the FA Cup run into Sunderland, we can use the experience from the United game and take it into the league.

“We can use the great run in the FA Cup as confidence to stay in the league, and we are confident as a group of players that we come.

“You should never fear anyone, you should always go out there and cross that white line, you want to win games of football.”
