Spearing seeking winning feeling as season gets underway

4 September 2020

Jay Spearing is eager for Tranmere Rovers to make an early impression as the team prepare for the 2020/21 season to commence.

The Whites are back in action as they take on Harrogate Town in the Carabao Cup first-round on Saturday afternoon, with Spearing eyeing up a positive start to the campaign.

Rovers’ new summer signing could be in line for a competitive first-team debut and believes the squad is well-equipped to approach the new season ahead following a productive pre-season period.

Spearing said: “It’s the start of our competitive games. We’ve had quite a few friendlies now, which have got us ready, and we’ve worked for the last four to five weeks to get in the condition we are in and ready for this game on Saturday.

“We obviously don’t like losing games. We lost a couple in pre-season and drew one. We want to win, even though they are pre-season games. We want to try and kick on as quickly as we can and you want to have that winning feeling and momentum going into the league game the following weekend.

“I’ve loved every minute of it,” added Spearing on his start to life at the Club. “It’s fantastic to get to such a big club and to be local to home. The lads have been fantastic as well, they have welcomed me with open arms, the manager, the staff; it’s a great place to come in and work every day. I’m ready to kick on and get busy now.”

Tranmere will face Harrogate for the first time this weekend, with the sides set to meet again in Sky Bet League Two later on this term.

Rovers’ new recruit is aware of the capabilities possessed by Saturday’s opponents and maintains that the National League play-off winners must be treated with full respect when the teams go head-to-head at Prenton Park.

He said: “They’ve now just come up into the Football League for the first time, so they’re going to be willing to go. Even though it’s a cup game, every game they play this year is going to be their final. We’re the first ones to face them, so we’re going to look forward to it. It’s going to be difficult, but we know if we turn up and play the way we want to play we should hopefully be in the hat for the next round.

“Their confidence is going to be high; they’ve got nothing to lose this year. They can go out every week and just give it their all. From what I’ve seen and heard, they deserved the promotion they got. But we have to concentrate on ourselves, we want to get that winning feeling as soon as possible and hopefully that comes on Saturday.”
