Match Preview: Newport County

20 August 2021

Tranmere Rovers return to Prenton Park this weekend, with Newport County making the trip from South Wales.

Micky Mellon’s side drew 0-0 away at Swindon on Tuesday night, meaning Rovers maintain their unbeaten start to the Sky Bet League Two season.

Tickets information for this fixture can be found here.

Team News

Chris Merrie returns from suspension following his red card on the opening day of the season against Walsall.

Calum MacDonald is stepping up his recovery in training but this game is expected to be too soon for him. Scott Davies is still sidelined in the long term with his achilles injury.

One to Watch

Kevin Ellison

The 42-year-old is a name familiar to fans of both clubs, having spent the 2006/07 season at Tranmere, and being a Newport player since September 2020.

Ellison has played for many clubs, and has had spells at Leicester City, Chester, Hull City, Rotherham United, and Bradford City, as well as many more.

He spent nine years at Morecambe, featuring over 350 times in the league for the Shrimps. Ellison joined Newport last season, and scored an 88th minute winner against Oldham in their first game of the 2021/22 season.

Manager

Michael Flynn

In permanent charge of the Welsh club since May 2017, Newport County have gone from strength to strength under Michael Flynn.

Since his appointment, Newport have got to the League Two Play-Off Final on two occasions. First, losing to Rovers in 2019. There was further heartbreak in the play-offs in May, as Newport were defeated in the final by Morecambe.

Flynn has also guided his side to a number of giant-killings in the FA Cup, beating the likes of Leicester, Middlesbrough, and Leeds United in previous seasons.
