Micky looks ahead to season opener

6 August 2021

Tranmere Rovers manager Micky Mellon says it’s exciting to be back at Prenton Park ahead of the season opener against Walsall on Saturday.

Rovers begin their 2021/22 Sky Bet League Two with a home fixture, hosting Matthew Taylor’s Saddlers side.

He said: “I’m looking forward to it. The players are at a stage now where they need competitive football. The friendlies are done now, they’re looking forward to getting out there and competing at a level for valuable points.

It’s exciting and great to be back at Prenton Park, it’s time to get started now.”

Over the course of the summer, the manager has brought in a number of new faces to the club, but says he’d still like a few more additions to his squad.

“We are a little bit low on numbers. It’s all about finding the right quality in the talent pool that we’re shopping in. We will try our best to get the best that we can.

It’s not just about getting numbers in. It’s about getting that quality in to enhance what we already have. We’ve still got some time left so we can do that.”

Mellon adds he is happy with the players brought in so far, saying they have already shown their quality ahead of the new season.

“We’re pleased [with the recruitment so far] and we’ve done very well to get a lot of talent into the building, as the players have shown in training and in the pre-season games. There’s a lot of quality out there. But we still want to be improving as a group and to get to know each other better.

“The early signs are very good, but we would like to add a little bit more, and these things take time.”

Walsall are the visitors to Prenton Park and will provide a tough test for Rovers as both teams will be looking to hit the ground running.

"Walsall are in a pretty similar situation to us. They will no doubt have expectations on them just like we have. We've watched a lot of them in pre season and we know it will be a tough challenge for us but one we're really looking forward to."
