Salford City U18s 1-1 Tranmere Rovers U18s

24 August 2021

Tranmere Rovers U18s picked up a point away at Salford City in the EFL Youth Alliance Cup on Saturday thanks to a last gasp equaliser from Ethan Jones.

Salford have started the season on very good form, winning their first two games and they started the brighter of the two teams in this encounter. They applied plenty of early pressure with a barrage of crosses into the Rovers box.

This prompted Tranmere into a change in formation, opting to go for a three at the back shape. This allowed the young Rovers side to maintain a foothold in the game and in possession.

Just before half time, Salford went closest to opening the scoring however James Dineley produced an excellent stop to keep Rovers on level terms at the interval.

It was the home side who started the brighter in the second period and they got their reward on the 55th minute. A dangerous cross from the right was diverted past Dineley from close range to the give The Ammies the advantage.

Salford had a great to chance to double the lead just five minutes from time but excellent defending from Joe Haley and Dom Cain denied a shot from inside the box.

Salford would rue this missed chance as Rovers found an equaliser at the death.

Joe Haley launched a long throw into the box which eventually fell to Ethan Jones who calmly slotted into the net to spark Tranmere celebrations.

Tranmere will be hoping to take the positives from this performance and build on it as they face Preston North End on Friday afternoon.
