Micky: We let a lot of people down

5 December 2021

Tranmere Rovers manager Micky Mellon says that his side let a lot of people down, after losing 4-0 to Leyton Orient in the Emirates FA Cup.

Harry Smith scored twice for Orient, with Aaron Drinan and Omar Beckles also scoring for the hosts.

He said: “I don’t think disappointing is enough. We’ve let an awful lot of people down today with our performance. From the start, we were nowhere near what was required to try and get something out of the game.

“I thought we were really poor with the ball today, and passed it nowhere near enough. We didn’t fight hard enough to find the space in order to try and win the ball. Overall, we were nowhere near it. We were well beaten.

“Which is really tough for a manager to say. We have to go over it again, and find out why. In the last game, on the Tuesday, we competed and ran very hard. We put our personality onto that game. Today, all over the pitch apart from maybe one or two places, we weren’t able to do that.

“I’ll have a look at it, and see what I can do to try and fix it. At this moment in time, all I can say is, we come back on Monday, and we work hard for another game on Tuesday night. I’m disappointed beyond disappointed, for the players, for the fans, and for everyone who travelled here today.

“We acknowledge that, and we feel for that. We didn’t want to give up an FA Cup run so easily. Today, we weren’t at the races at all. And we’ll look for the reasons why.”
