Match Preview: Grimsby Town

11 February 2021

Tranmere Rovers will be looking to get back to winning ways this weekend with a trip to Blundell Park to face Grimsby Town

Rovers approach this game having suffered their first league defeat of 2021 on Tuesday night against Grimsby but prior to that it had been six straight wins in all competitions. Keith Hill’s side currently place 4th in the division, outside of the automatic positions on goal difference.

Grimsby, who are managed by Paul Hurst, occupy the bottom position in Sky Bet League Two. The Mariners have lost five and drew one of their last six fixtures in the league.

One to watch

Defender, Luke Waterfall.

Luke may be a familiar name to the eagle eyed Rovers faithful after being with the club during the 2008-09 season.

Since being released by Tranmere in 2009, the defender has gone on to play for many lower league clubs before making the climb back into the football league. He was at the likes of Ilkeston and Gainsborough Trinity before Scunthorpe United of League Two snapped him up.

In 2015 he had a brief stint at non league Wrexham but couldn’t help them out of the fifth tier. Soon after he signed for Lincoln City and really found form for The Imps, helping them gain promotion out of the National League, in a neck and neck season with Rovers.

This form earned him another move higher up the leagues, this time with League One Shrewsbury Town where he spent a season before signing for the Mariners in August of 2015.

Waterfall will be aiming to keep Rovers off the score sheet on Saturday and provide a threat from set pieces at the other end of the pitch himself.
