Match Preview: Oldham Athletic

18 February 2021

Tranmere Rovers switch their focus back to Sky Bet League Two action this weekend as we go up against Oldham Athletic at Prenton Park.

Rovers most recently defeated League One Oxford United on Tuesday to set up a final at Wembley with Sunderland in the Papa John’s Trophy. In terms of the league, Keith Hill’s men have won five and lost once in the previous six games and find themselves well poised in 6th place in the division.

Oldham Athletic, managed by Harry Kewell, last played on Tuesday night against Forest Green Rovers in a dramatic 4-3 defeat at the New Lawn. The Latics’ league form reads as two wins, three defeats and one draw in their last six outings which leaves them placing in 17th position of the Sky Bet League Two Table.

Team news

In his Thursday press conference, Keith Hill has said that Otis Khan may be out of action for this one after picking up a knock on Tuesday night however he will be assessed in the coming days.

One to watch

Striker, Conor McAleny

With his goal tally standing at 16 goals this season in all competitions, McAleny will be a player that Rovers will have to keep quiet at Prenton Park on Saturday.

Liverpool born, McAleny started his career at Everton having joined the Toffees aged just 11. Despite being a promising prospect right through his academy career, the forward only managed to appear three times for Everton and featured on loan for six different teams, some of which included Brentford, Cardiff and Charlton Athletic.

In 2017 he joined Fleetwood Town and enjoyed the longest run of games so far in his career appearing 55 times for the Cod Army over three years.

The Latics signed the 28 year old in the summer of 2020 and has proved to be a shrewd move by Harry Kewell with the striker leading the way in terms of goals at Boundary Park.
