Match Preview: Oxford United

15 February 2021

Tranmere Rovers visit the Kassam Stadium to face Oxford United in the semi finals of the Papa John’s Trophy on Tuesday night (6pm kick off) with a place at Wembley at stake.

Rovers have reached this round of the competition after previously defeating Man City U21s, Leicester City U21s and Peterborough United in the knockout stages.

Oxford are still in the competition following victories against Forest Green, Cambridge United and AFC Wimbledon.

Team news

Keith Hill has no new injury or Covid-19 concerns and had this to say ahead of the game.

‘There is going to be justification for team selection and bearing in mind that there are players who have done so well to get us as far as we have done, there is going to be a rich reward for the players.”

One to watch

Striker, Matt Taylor.

Back at the Club where it all began, Taylor tops the goal scoring charts for Oxford this season with 11 to his name so far.

With limited opportunities at The Us at the beginning of his career, he made the move to Forest Green Rovers, a Club where Taylor got his first real taste of consistent football as he appeared 96 times and scored 22 goals.

His performances earned him a move to then National League side Bristol Rovers where he enjoyed his most prolific period of his career and helped Bristol Rovers to consecutive promotions to League One.

In 2017, he controversially made the switch to fierce rivals Bristol City where he didn’t maintain his goalscoring form with only seven goals in 67 appearances for The Robins.

A successful loan spell at Oxford last season was made permanent in the summer of 2020.
