Match Preview: Barnsley

8 January 2021

Tranmere Rovers turn their attention to the Emirates FA Cup this weekend with a trip to Barnsley in the third round of the cup competition.

Rovers have reached this round of the tournament by defeating Accrington Stanley and Brackley Town. This will be the third consecutive year that Tranmere will play in this stage of the Emirates FA Cup.

Team news

Keith Hill has reported that some of his squad are due to miss out through both injury and Covid-19 issues.

In his press conference he said: “We’re suffering from injury, illness and Covid issues. That presents a challenge for us in itself but also an opportunity for players who haven’t been playing on a regular basis as well as some younger professionals”

One to watch

Striker, Cauley Woodrow.

Coming through the ranks of Tottenham Hotspur and Luton Town, Woodrow is a striker with plenty of pedigree.

His senior career really kick started with Fulham as he signed a two year contract on his 17th birthday. He made his Premier League debut in 2014 and netted his first top flight goal on the final day of that season.

The 26 year old gained EFL experience whilst on loan at several Championship clubs including Barnsley where he bagged four goals in 10 games during the loan spell.

That deal was made permanent in 2019 and there has been no looking back for the forward who is now an important player for the Oakwell side and often a key source of goals.
