Micky full of praise after final pre season game

31 July 2021

Micky Mellon was full of praise for his side following a late narrow defeat to Premier League side Burnley at Prenton Park

Despite a full strength Burnley team, Rovers more than held their own throughout the contest leaving the Boss satisfied with the run out.

He said “It’s important that the people at home who weren’t at the game know that I’m being as honest as I can with them. My team played really well today and matched Burnley’s first team who will play in the Premier League.

“We did everything that we wanted to do and competed in all areas of the pitch. I’m really gutted for the players that they end up getting out done by a 25 yard volley Premier League style to lose the game.

“In terms of a work out and where we want to be finishing pre season, we’re in a good place. We’re still short of numbers but we’ll work on that in the next few weeks.”

“We passed the ball and went through the lines really well. We spoke about how we could cause Burnley problems and the lads did that really well. The work rate off the ball was there and we were relentless in not giving them time on the ball. It is definitely another performance to build on.

“All of our focus will now be on Walsall and the first game of the season. Getting the fans in and making sure we hit the ground running with the tempo and quality that we showed today”
