New 3G pitch at the Campus set for September opening

30 June 2021

Tranmere Rovers are pleased to report significant progress is been made on the new all-weather 3G pitch at the Club’s training facility, the Campus.

Earlier this year, the new state of the art surface received the necessary approval in order for construction to begin in April, with the aim for the facility to be open and available to the general public by September 2021.

Based on Leasowe Road, Wallasey, the 3G installation has been supported by Wirral Borough Council and provides an excellent all-weather outdoor facility for the local community to use.

The 3G pitch installation forms part of a number of community focused initiatives driven by the football club and follows quickly on from the opening of the Beechwood Recreation Centre last month.

Chairman Mark Palios said: “We signed a partnership agreement with Wirral Borough Council in late 2019, to work with the Council, supporting the local community.

“Wirral has been identified by The FA as a top priority for increased provision of football facilities. The installation of the 3G pitch at the Campus will provide an important community asset and presents opportunities for thousands of local people to participate in football and a wide range of other sporting activity.”

The project was supported with a capital contribution of £345,000 from Wirral Council, representing just under 50% of the construction cost. The support was agreed in March 2021 as part of the Council and the Club’s Partnering Agreement to work together for the benefit of the borough.

Cllr Janette Williamson, Leader of Wirral Council, said: “Tranmere Rovers have long been a club committed to supporting our local community. This partner project further confirms that ethos.

“The pitch, which will be available to the community for more than 60 hours a week during term time, compared to just 25 hours a week for the club and international use, will allow many keen footballers to enjoy a state-of-the-art facility right here in Wirral.

“I’m thrilled by the progress made in this joint venture with what will be a fantastic community asset for Leasowe residents and those further afield when it’s completed.”

The construction is being led by Blakedown Sport and Play, and they are one of the UK’s largest and long established sports facility construction contractors.

Blakedown Sports & Play director, Anthony Farmer, said: “Blakedown Sport and Play are very pleased to be working with Tranmere Rovers Football Club and Wirral Borough Council to develop their new 3G pitch at the Campus.

The work is progressing well and will provide a wonderful facility within the Club’s excellent training ground, as well as a great addition for the local community to use.”

The Club will provide further information as how to book pitches in the near future so please keep an eye on all Tranmere Rovers social media channels to follow the construction progress.
