Nugent on win over Exeter

20 March 2021

Striker David Nugent scored his first goal for TRFC on Saturday afternoon as he helped Rovers secure a 2-1 win against promotion chasing Exeter City.

Nugent converted a first half penalty, the opening goal of the game, as Tranmere recorded their tenth league win in 2021.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Nugent said: “It is always nice to score your first goal for the Club. Someone has to take over from James Vaughan on penalties in his absence, so I am more than happy to take a penalty. I am an experienced player, so I am happy to have the pressure of taking a penalty on my shoulders and help the team as much as I can.

“I am trying to catch up with my fitness, it is like a pre-season for me in some ways. It is a very important stage of the season and results are the most important thing.

“We didn’t play at our best today, but we won the game which is the main thing.

“I have not played two games per week for a long time, Paul Lewis came on for me today and he made a massive difference. We know this is a squad game and we have 11 games to go and I am sure if we show the same desire to win as we did today, we will be fine.

“We have had some long trips recently and we have another one on Tuesday night. We have got to play a lot of teams around us in the run in so it is in our own hands what we do this season.”
