RIP Frank Worthington

23 March 2021

The Club was indeed sad to hear the passing of former player-manager Frank Worthington at the age of 72.

Frank’s long, illustrious and colourful career as a player at a host of clubs including Huddersfield Town, Leicester City, Bolton Wanderers, Birmingham City and Leeds United caught the attention by then-club chairman Bruce Osterman, and joined Rovers in the summer of 1985.

From this point on, he will be fondly remembered here at Tranmere Rovers, not only for his flamboyant character – but also recruiting some notable names to the Tranmere squad that season, such as Ian Muir, John Morrissey, Mark Hughes and Steve Vickers.

With financial problems overshadowing events on the pitch the following season however, his time at Rovers ended rather abruptly in early February 1987, as following a 1-1 draw with Northampton Town at Prenton Park, the Club entered administration and Frank was relieved of his managerial duties.

Leaving behind some good memories here at Prenton Park, our deepest sympathies are now with all of Frank’s family and friends.
