Report: Morecambe 1-1 Tranmere

23 May 2021

A second half goal from James Vaughan was not enough for Tranmere as Morecambe progressed to the League Two Play-Off final.

The score finished 1-1 on the day, with the Shrimps progressing 3-2 on aggregate.

The result means Tranmere will play the 2021/22 season in Sky Bet League Two.

Ian Dawes made one change from last Thursday’s first leg with Paul Lewis stepping in for Otis Khan, our number 17 named amongst the substitutes.

Meanwhile, Ali Crawford was on the bench for TRFC, Danny Lloyd the man to miss out of the matchday squad.

Hosts Morecambe, leading 2-1 from the first leg, had former TRFC pair Cole Stockton and Ben Pringle in their team, the former starting with the latter on the bench for Derek Adams’ side.

Morecambe had a couple of early half opportunities, but James Vaughan had the first opening of the game, when his header went over the bar.

But the home side did extend their lead to two goals when poor defending from Rovers was capitalised on and Wildig calmly slid the ball beyond Joe Murphy.

Tranmere could not get into their flow, and the next opportunity came with 26 minutes on the clock as Vaughan ballooned a shot over the bar.

Lewis had a strike just before half time which was well saved by the goalkeeper but Tranmere needed two goals in the second half to level the tie.

Rovers made two changes at half time with Khan and David Nugent coming on, replacing Lee O’Connor and Keiron Morris.

The switch in personnel and formation paid dividends in the 53rd minute as a corner from Liam Feeney was turned home by top goal scorer, Vaughan, to level the score on the day and TRFC were once again one down in the tie, with more than half an hour to play.

In the 63rd minute, Corey Blackett-Taylor came off for Kaiyne Woolery and Calum MacDonald replaced Liam Ridehalgh.

Tranmere were ramping up the pressure and Manny Monthe had a header saved, and moments later, Woolery’s long range shot was well saved by the goalkeeper.

However, Morecambe held onto their slender lead to book their place in the Play-Off final and the season concluded for TRFC, and we will remain in Sky Bet League Two next season.

Tranmere: Murphy, O’Connor (Khan 46), Clarke, Monthe, Ridehalgh (MacDonald 63), Spearing, Lewis, Morris (Nugent 46), Feeney, Blackett-Taylor (Woolery 63), Vaughan. Unused subs: Jones, Nelson, Crawford.
