Hewelt: The fans behind the goal always help

10 August 2022

Rovers goalkeeper Mateusz Hewelt praised the lads for their second half comeback, saying that the players wanted more after the first half.

"It's always a nice one for a keeper for it to finish with penalties because you've got the opportunity to be a hero! I thought the lads did really well in the second half to come back from that, we wanted more from the first half performance but a good result in the end."

Mateusz also praised the fans for the part they played in the comeback, especially after Josh Hawkes' goal.

"The fans behind the goal always help, don't they? After we got that first goal they went mad and pushed us on and we got the second."

Moving onto the penalty shootout, Hewelt revealed that there was only one Accrington player he got information on and that the shootout was a guessing game.

"There was only one taker I really got information on, I knew he was going down the middle just like most of them really, most of them went down the middle, I just kept guessing and got one right at the end.

"Goalkeepers are expected to save penalties in a shootout, but they aren't expected to score them! Hewelt talked about the moment he realised he'd have to step up and the penalty itself."

"To be fair about three penalties before I thought it might make it to this so when I saw no one walking up to the ball I thought right, it's time. Stick it down the middle. It was just a pass straight down the middle, he got a foot to it, luckily it went in."
