O'Connor's thoughts ahead of Colchester

26 August 2022

Lee O’Connor says that he is confident that Rovers can keep up the energy levels from Wednesday and carry them into league action at Prenton Park on Saturday.

It’s back to the bread and butter of League Two with Colchester United the challenge in front of Micky Mellon’s men this weekend.

“It shouldn’t be too difficult to keep up the intensity from Wednesday. We don’t have much of a break but we’re used to that at this stage so once the game gets going I think it’s more of a mental thing, if we can get over that I think we’ll be fine.

“In terms of work rate we just need more of the same. We need to continue that application. We score a great goal and got the ball down at times so we need to take a lot from Wednesday.

“I think people can tell we’re trying to play a little bit more at times. Of course it’s not always going to be on so we need to pick and choose when it’s the right time to do it but we’ve shown that we’re more than capable of doing it.

“In the time that I’ve been here, you’ve seen teams in the past come from nowhere and they’re right up there come the end of the season. Of course we would have liked to have started better but I think it will come. It will take time but I think we’re starting to see what we’re capable of. The ask for us now is to get that consistency.

“We all know that it will take time but at the same time it can be tough because you’ve still got to find ways of getting results.

“Colchester will be a different game to Wednesday. They’ll obviously be a different proposition to Newcastle but I think for the majority of it is about us. If we show the same kind of application and work rate as Wednesday, I’ll be confident of getting a result.”
