TRIC NCS groups raise 149kg of food donations for Wirral Foodbank

24 August 2022

Following a successful collection from our July and August NCS programmes, Tranmere Rovers in the Community dropped off a huge 149 kilograms of items of food for donation at Wirral Foodbank today.

Our 16-18 year olds brought in various items of food each morning when they attended our NCS activities, which included social action and fundraising projects including raising over £500 and giving over 100 volunteer hours to Tam O’Shanter Urban Farm last week

The 149 kilograms of food donated could help feed up to eight families of two adults and two children in need of emergency food parcels.

Due to the cost of living crisis, food banks are reliant on donations now more than ever.

According to the University of Sheffield’s research into local food insecurity of adults (January 2021), in Wirral, 15.84% of adults struggled to access food, and 9.4% were worried about not having enough food.

Among the 8,765 people supported by Wirral Foodbank, 2,986 were children. The numbers in 2022 of people relying on the donations are 11% up on last year’s figures.

8% of people using the foodbank were in work, and 47% of people say that their income does not cover their living costs.

If you would like to help out by donating food to Wirral Foodbank, items can be delivered from Monday to Thursday between 10am and 1.30pm to the Warehouse at Unit 14 Wirral Business Centre, Dock Road, Birkenhead, CH41 1JW.

Wirral Foodbank would be extremely grateful for items such as the following, which they are appealing for now:

  • Tinned Meat
  • Tinned fruit
  • Squash
  • Tinned tomatoes
  • Tinned fish
  • Biscuits
  • Jam
  • Nappies (size 6)
