Tranmere Rovers recorded a convincing win on home soil on Boxing Day with a 3-0 victory over Doncaster Rovers at Prenton Park.
Goals from Kane Hemmings, Kieron Morris and Paul Lewis was enough to send the SWA home happy in the last home game of 2022.
It was a cagey opening to proceedings with both sides looking to retain possession. Doncaster worked their way into the Tranmere box before Seaman’s low driven cross went all the way along the six yard box without anyone getting on the end of it.
Tranmere’s first chance to hit the target came via a Josh Hawkes 25 yard free kick but his attempt to dip the effort over the wall only resulted in it sailing over the bar.
Just past the half hour mark, Tom Davies was given the freedom of the back post to try and guide his header past Mitchell in the Doncaster goal. His header was powerful from Dacres-Cogley’s cross but it was well held by the keeper.
Right on the stroke of half time, Micky Mellon’s men got their noses in front. Some fantastic link up play between Morris and Dacres-Cogley on the right led to Kane Hemmings getting in front of his man and poking the ball home from close range to give Rovers the advantage at the break.
Tranmere started the second half as they meant to go on. Josh Hawkes’ curling shot from the inside right of the box just swerved inches past the far post.
It didn’t take long for Rovers to double their lead as in the 60th minute Kieron Morris played a nice one two with Tom Davies before unleashing a sublime effort into the far corner with his left foot, giving Mitchell no chance and putting Tranmere in cruise control.
With 12 minutes left on the clock, substitute Paul Lewis put the icing on the Christmas cake. More good play from Dacres-Cogley down the right who shifted the ball onto his right foot before delivering a pin point cross onto the head of Lewis who powered his header into the back of the net from 10 yards out.
The visitors very nearly grabbed a consolation in the 89th minute as George Miller controlled in the box and beat Doohan but Dacres-Cogley was there to clear off the line and preserve the clean sheet for Tranmere.
The referee sounded his whistle and Tranmere pick up a Boxing Day win and will bounce into the upcoming festive games with a spring in their step.
