Match Preview: Newport County

25 February 2022

After a tricky run for Micky Mellon’s side, attentions have quickly turned to the trip to south Wales as Rovers take on Newport County in Sky Bet League Two.

A very late equaliser from Jamie Proctor prevented Rovers from taking all three points last time out as we had to settle for a point at Prenton Park.

Newport are suffering from a dip in form, seeing no win from their last four games with their previous two results both being draws against Oldham Athletic and Mansfield Town respectively.

With County sitting just one place and one point behind the play-off places, the Welsh side will be a tough test for Micky Mellon’s side at the weekend.

Team News:

Jay Spearing and Paul Glatzel both remain sidelined through injury. A clean bill of health otherwise for Micky Mellon to choose from.

One to Watch: Dom Telford

Born in Lancashire, Newport Striker Dom Telford has been in fine form this season particularly in league action.

The former Bury and Plymouth striker has got 22 goals and an assist in 23 league appearances so far this season.

With four goals in his last five games, Telford will be full of confidence heading into the big clash on Saturday afternoon, hoping to add to his already fantastic tally as the season enters the business end of the campaign.

Manager: James Rowberry

He began his coaching career at a fairly early age of 29 when he became one of the youngest coaches to gain his UEFA Pro Licence qualification.

After featuring as a coach at Cardiff City, he was appointed permanent manager of his hometown club in mid-October 2021 whilst County sat 13th in Sky Bet League Two.

He has since mounted a play-off charge for the Welsh side and has picked up some impressive wins during his relatively new tenure.
