Micky: It's about winning the next game

11 February 2022

Rovers boss Micky Mellon spoke to the local media ahead of Saturday's clash away at Walsall and he praised everyone involved with the club after Tuesday's emotional victory.

Micky said the reaction from the players on Tuesday was fantastic but not surprising, with the squad dedicating their victory to young Nate Gidman.

"It was fantastic but not surprising, I think we've shown we're a football club that cares about our supporters as a big family. We were upset and we wanted to show our support and I think that the football club and the players and everybody did that.

"I've got to stress that I'm not surprised, that's just the way we are. We didn't mean it, we didn't stage it, it was just the emotion of something so tragic. That's how it made us feel and we wanted to show our support and I think we did that.

Focus now switches to the weekend for Tranmere and an important clash with Walsall in the West Midlands. Micky stressed that Rovers are approaching their fixtures one game at a time and are ready for Saturday's encounter.

"It's about winning the next game, preparing properly tomorrow. We've worked hard today getting the boys ready, preparing again tomorrow and then going to try and pick up another three points.

"That's how close we'll keep our focus, is just on that. As we go along and we'll have a look and see where we're up to. But it'll be complete focus on what we can control and all we can control is what's here and now, so we'll continue to deal with that."

Walsall are currently on a poor run of form, having picked up just one point since the start of the new year, Micky insisted that his players must steer away from their opponent's struggles at the weekend and guard against complacency.

"If you start to think that way and think that you get any givens in football that's when you start to make problems.

"You've got to make sure you steer away from that and try to be the best version of yourselves, it's important that you do that because that's what it takes to pick up points. That will be no different on Saturday.
