Tranmere Rovers 4-0 Scunthorpe United

8 January 2022

Tranmere made it six consecutive league wins with a convincing 4-0 win over Scunthorpe United thanks to goals from Charlie Jolley, Elliot Nevitt, Sam Foley and Ryan Watson

The victory at Prenton Park leaves Tranmere 2nd in Sky Bet League Two.

It was the first game since Boxing Day for Rovers after having two fixtures over the festive period postponed due to Covid within the squad, but it was the perfect return for Micky Mellon’s side.

Despite not having too much of the possession in the opening few minutes, it was Rovers who opened the scoring on 23 minutes with Jolley picking up a Peter Clarke header and driving towards goal before curling the ball past Scunthorpe keeper Rory Watson.

It was soon two for Tranmere as Liam Feeney looked to have missed an opportunity with a slight mis control, but his cross was only half cleared and fell to Nevitt who struck the ball beautifully into the top left corner from 20 yards out to double the host's advantage.

Scunthorpe did give Rovers a couple of reminders that the points weren’t wrapped up just yet with Mason O’Malley drilling a shot on target but it was straight down the throat of Ross Doohan.

The second half started positively for Rovers with Jolley nearly getting his second of the game inside the opening 25 seconds with a powerful effort which was tipped around the post by Watson.

Josh McPake nearly had a debut goal as he got in behind the Scunthorpe defence and lofted the ball over the onrushing Watson, but George Taft was there to divert the effort for a corner.

The visitors nearly got themselves back into the game with an effort by Hayden Hackney from a corner but he was prevented by a brilliant backheel goal-line clearance from Tom Davies.

With just over 15 minutes of normal time to play, it was three for Rovers as Jay Spearing played a brilliant ball for substitute Sam Foley who finished clinically and put Rovers out of sight.

Another of Micky Mellon’s substitutes nearly got on the scoresheet as Paul Glatzel was close to scoring on his return from injury with an effort from close range which was well saved by Watson.

But in the last minute of normal time, Tranmere did find a fourth of the afternoon with Ryan Watson sneaking in to score from close range as Rovers scored two goals in either half.

And the score line finished 4-0 with Tranmere getting another convincing win at Prenton park whilst also keeping a fifth consecutive clean sheet in Sky Bet League Two.

Next up for Micky Mellon’s in-form side is a trip to Salford City on Tuesday night for the rearranged fixture that was previously postponed on New Years day.

Tranmere team: Doohan, Dacres-Cogley, Clarke, Davies, MacDonald, Feeney, Spearing, O'Connor, McPake (Foley 64') Nevitt (Glatzel 78'), Jolley (Watson 87')

Unused subs: Murphy, Hayde, Maguire
