Byrne wants to use his experience to help the group

1 July 2022

Neill Byrne looks forward to experiencing the atmosphere as part of the home side at Prenton Park, as he describes it as special.

“First and foremost, I am a defender so I want to keep clean sheets, make tackles, win my headers but when the time is right and the opportunity presents itself, I like to get the ball down and play. Defenders in the modern era need to know how to play football too, so it’s something I’ve tried to keep up with and develop my skillset.”

“I’m now looking forward to meeting the lads, I know a couple of them already I played with Paul Lewis when I was younger and I know Joe Murphy. I’ve had a look around the training ground today and we have very good facilities, the gym, the grass pitches, everything around the place looks brilliant so I’m excited to get going.”

“When Tranmere scored a late goal against Hartlepool last season and I heard the roar from the KOP, it was special, so I am looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere now as part of the home team.”

Speaking on how the move initially came about:

“I live close to Joe Murphy and bumped into him when I was out and it escalated from there. Then my agent got in touch to say there was interest and it was a move I wanted to make.”

Byrne spoke on his talks with manager Micky Mellon:

“The talks with the manager have been really positive, I had a good chat with him about his style of play and where he sees me fitting into that. I’ve played against Micky’s team's plenty of times over the years and they’ve always been competitive, they give their all and play a good brand of football”

“I probably see myself as more of an experienced head now, so as much as I can relay and give advice to the younger lads, I’ll be looking to do that, as when I was a younger lad I used to try and feed off the older, more experienced lads.”

It’s a big team effort to get out of this league, it’s a big team effort and a lot of graft but it’s something I imagine this team will have and I’m just looking to fit in and give my all to the team.”
