Turnbull excited by the project at Rovers

27 July 2022

On Tuesday it was announce that Rovers had secured the signing of defender Jordan Turnbull on a two year contract after he left Salford City this summer.

The 27 year old was voted into last season’s League Two Team of the Season after an impressive campaign and has now penned a contract with Rovers until at least the summer of 2024.

We sat down with Jordan after signing the deal to get his thoughts and feelings on becoming Rovers’ newest recruit.

“I’m delighted and really excited to be here. It’s all happened quite quickly and I’ve had a good chat with the manager who opened my eyes to a lot of things I didn’t know about Tranmere so as soon I had that conversation I wanted to get it done as soon as possible.

“I’ve obviously played at Prenton Park a few times, it’s a great stadium and a great fan base who turn up in their numbers as well. The Gaffer has spoken to me about the training facilities and the infrastructure at the club which really opened my eyes. This is a really ambitious club with an exciting group of players so I’m really excited about the project and can’t wait to get going."

Turnbull helped Salford to keep 17 cleans sheets last campaign and was voted into the Team of the Season but opposition managers from the 23 other clubs. Jordan reflects on that season positively and aims to replicate that form in a white shirt.

“Personally, last season was a great season for me and I just want to continue that now. I feel like I’ve joined a fantastic football club which not only wants to get promotion but also wants to continue progressing and getting better. It’s all about going out there, enjoying it and doing ourselves justice by getting into a good position at the end of the season."

Having won promotion with Northampton Town in 2020, Jordan knows what it takes to earn promotion from League Two and says he is excited by the plans put in place to do the same at Prenton Park this campaign.

“It’s difficult at any level but we just need to get a good start to the season and be consistent with it. All of the boys are going to have the same aim and will be pushing together. The manager is really positive about the group of players that he’s got and wants to go with a real attacking approach to the season and really take it to teams. I think it’s going to be super exciting for not only the fans but the players as well.

“We want to get on the front foot and attack teams. I think you see that style implanted more and more throughout football now and I think it can really benefit us. We’ve got a lot of youth in the team and good legs so we’re going to be a high energy pressing team and hopefully that really pays off for us."

After signing on the dotted line on Tuesday, Jordan took a look around Prenton Park and reminisced on playing in front of the SWA for several opponents.

“It’s a fantastic stadium, brilliant fan base and the pitch is fantastic. Everyone speaks about having that ‘extra man’ behind you with the crowd so if we can get as many people behind us every week then it’s only going to push the lads on and help us get the wins we need.

“Everyone will be pushing in the right direction. It’s a big football club for this level and it can only get even bigger with the infrastructure in place so I’m sure everyone will be hoping to be right up there at the end of the season. We’re going to go out there every week and give it our all.

“I’ve had a bit of a long lay off during pre season so I can’t wait to get in there and meet the boys and integrate with the lads. I might not be match ready for a couple of weeks but I’ll help in any way I can and be raring to go once I’m match fit and called upon.”
