Grimsby Town Football Club is a professional football club based in Cleethorpes, North East Lincolnshire, England. Nicknamed "the Mariners", the club was founded as Grimsby Pelham Football Club in 1878 and changed its name to Grimsby Town a year later. The club moved to its current home Blundell Park in 1898.
Early History
The club was formed in 1878 after a meeting held at the Wellington Arms pub on Freeman Street, Grimsby. In attendance at the meeting were members of the local Worsley Cricket Club who wanted to form a football club to occupy the winter evenings after the cricket season had finished.
The club was originally called Grimsby Pelham after the family name of the Earl of Yarborough who owned a lot of land in the area. The club’s original colours were blue and white hoops which were changed to chocolate brown and blue quartered shirts in 1884. In 1910 the iconic black and white stripes were introduced.
In 1892 the club entered the Football League after having previous applications rejected and their first game was a 2–1 victory over Northwich Victoria.
Recent History
During the 2012–13 season Grimsby Town made the final of the FA Trophy at Wembley Stadium where they played Wrexham. Grimsby went ahead in the second half through an Andy Cook strike. However Wrexham equalised through a penalty with nine minutes left. The game went to extra-time and penalties which Grimsby lost 4–1.
In 2015, Grimsby suffered a 5–3 shootout defeat to Bristol Rovers in the National League Playoff final and the 2015-16 season was a mixed one for the Mariners as they gained promotion back to the football league by beating Forest Green Rovers 3-1 in the Play-off final at Wembley, but they lost the FA Trophy Final 1-0 to Halifax Town a week later.
On 29th December 2019 Ian Holloway was appointed Grimsby Town manager but he left on 23rd December 2020.
In 2021 Grimsby were relegated back to the National League after finishing the season bottom of the table with 43 points from 46 games. Victories over Notts County in the quarter-final and Wrexham in the semi-final of the play-offs set up a date with Solihull Moors in the 2022 final at the London Stadium. Grimsby won 2-1 after extra-time to secure promotion back to the Football League.
