Micky: It's an important result for us

1 May 2022

Rovers boss Micky Mellon didn't underestimate the importance of Saturday's victory in his post-match interview after his side battled to earn three points at home to Oldham which keep their playoff hopes alive.

Goals from Josh Hawkes and Kane Hemmings saw the SWA to their 20th victory of the campaign, the Boss started his media duties by reflecting on the afternoon's work.

"I'm pleased that we got a win and we got a reaction to what we were disappointed with at the weekend. The players showed more of the qualities that we expect, but they've been like that at home all season so that was expected.

"It's an important result for us, it takes it to the last day which was the bare minimum that we had to be able to try and achieve, we just kept battling and all credit to the players, the players I thought were very calm in a nervy atmosphere and got the victory."

Micky was full of praise for the home performances but admitted that away from home the squad have been missing.

"That's what we expect all the time, we have said before that we lack that in away games. They be moments, they be knock-downs, they be flick-ons, they all add up and in away games, we've been missing.

"But not at home, we've been superb at home. It was a good victory, we should have scored a few more goals but it's a good victory and we'll see where it takes us now."

The victory on Saturday was the 51st point the SWA have accumulated at Prenton Park this season which is the best return from home games in the division, this only added to the Gaffer's frustration that the away form has been below par.

"You've got to say it's a bit frustrating that we couldn't do better away from home and pick up the results, but we've gone over that and we know why and hopefully the players have learned from that for the future."
