Lincoln City 4-2 Tranmere Rovers AET

23 November 2022

Tranmere Rovers put up a valiant effort in the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday night but were eventually beaten by Lincoln City.

A last gasp Tranmere equaliser took it to extra time but the Imps had too much firepower in the extra thirty minutes and added a further two goals.

The first sight of goal came the way of the hosts as Kamara met a free kick from the right but he got too much on it and it landed a few yards over the bar.

Just before the half hour mark, Rovers took the lead. Sam Taylor, who had been looking lively in the opening exchanges, was played in behind by Cummins before beating two men and firing into the far corner with precision.

Taylor was amongst the action again not long after when he cut inside from the right and fired a shot on target but Allen gathered it into his chest.

The Imps had their turn to come forward and thought they’d restored parity when Adamson got in behind and slid the ball underneath Khalid in the Tranmere goal but the linesman was on hand with his offside flag to cut the celebrations short.

Lincoln were growing into the game in a half that was mainly dominated by Rovers. Tucker found space in the box and curled towards the far corner but Khalid’s outstretched hand denied him.

Unfortunately that was the last of the action for Khalid who was replaced by Euan Bull at half time following taking a knock earlier in the game.

Rovers weren’t going to take their foot off the gas in the second half and Harvey Edgar overlapped Sam Taylor on the right before delivering a teasing cross which flashed past the head of Glennon at the far post.

On the hour mark, Lincoln utilised the pace of Wheatley down the right who ran into space and only had to find Adamson in the box but he overhit the pass and Bull swept it up.

Shortly after the Imps won themselves a penalty. Donnery beat his man to get into the box before Omar Hoyle slid in from the wrong side and brought the midfielder to ground. Donnery dusted himself down to take the penalty himself and sent Bull the wrong way to bring Lincoln level.

Lincoln should have edged in front almost immediately after when Wheatley exposed the space down the left to pick out Berko at the back post but he couldn’t connect with the goal at his mercy.

That pressure did pay dividends with 15 minutes to go. Wheatley twisted and turned past a tiring Rovers defence and fired low past Bull into the far corner to make it 2-1.

Rovers didn’t give up though and kept going right until the death. A well worked corner routine led to Eric Byrne letting loose on the edge of the box which was diverted into the back of the net by James Flight to spark wild celebrations from those in yellow and in the away dugout.

Another thirty minutes beckoned at Sincil Bank…

A fresh pair of legs would give the home side the advantage once again in the 97th minute. Boffah got forward from left back with a clipped ball in behind and there was Berko unmarked inside the box to guide the ball into the back of the net.

There was definitely no question over Tranmere’s fight and they came back at the Imps. Sam Taylor, a threat all night, tried his luck from distance but Allen was well positioned to deny him.

With Tranmere pushing for an equaliser, Lincoln all but put the game to bed. Kabaya exposed the space in behind the Rovers defence before firing a low cross which deflected into the back of the net to put the tie beyond Rovers.

The young Education Hub lads did the Club incredibly proud and can be pleased with their efforts and achievements in this year’s FA Youth Cup.
