Match Preview: AFC Wimbledon

18 November 2022

Action returns to Prenton Park for the first time in two weeks as Rovers look to secure an important three points in front of the SWA on Saturday afternoon.

It follows a 1-1 draw against promotion-chasers Swindon Town last week at the County Ground as an early Josh Hawkes opener was cancelled out on the half-hour mark by Jacob Wakeling before Jordan Turnbull was shown a red card deep into stoppage time.

As for AFC Wimbledon, they’ve got a similar record to Rovers in Sky Bet League Two this season with one less win and one more defeat leaving them in 15th position, four places behind Rovers.

With an F.A. Cup replay win against Weymouth on Tuesday, they’ll hope to build on that on Saturday when they travel up north to face Micky Mellon’s side after going unbeaten in their last eight games.

Team News:

Rovers will be without Jordan Turnbull who picked up a suspension following his dismissal at the County Ground on Saturday

Elliott Nevitt has had an injection in his toe on Thursday and will be assessed ahead of the match.

Paul Lewis returns to the fold after missing out last week due to the birth of his daughter.

One to Watch: Josh Davison

After experiencing multiple loans throughout his career, Josh Davison has seemed to find a home at AFC Wimbledon and has certainly found his goalscoring form.

After coming through the ranks at Peterborough United, he was loaned out twice into non-league before signing permanently for Enfield Town.

Again being loaned out, he was eventually picked up by Charlton, making his way back into the football league. He made 24 appearances for the Addicks across three years in which there was yet another three loan spells, two of which were in the football league with Forest Green Rovers and Swindon Town respectively.

In the summer of 2022, Davison joined Wimbledon on a permanent deal with the view of settling down at one place and getting first team football on a regular basis.

So far, he’s got six goals in 18 league appearances with three assists to also add to his tally and will be looking to add even more at Prenton Park on Saturday.

Manager: Johnnie Jackson

In his first season In charge, Johnnie Jackson was appointed manager of Wimbledon in May 2022 as he signed a two-year deal.

He has only had one permanent job previous at Charlton Athletic where he was well loved due to his playing spell with the club as well as a successful spell previous as caretaker boss. After winning nine of his 13 games in charge as Caretaker boss, he was given the job permanently.

But following the conclusion of the 2021/22 where it was announced he would be leaving the Valley, he was later announced the new boss of Wimbledon following their relegation from the third tier.

After a mixed start to the season, Jackson will be hoping to recapture some of his form with Charlton early on as he looked to boost Wimbledon back up the fourth tier.
