Match Preview: Burton Albion

22 November 2022

There’s another break from Sky Bet League Two action as attention turns to the Papa Johns Trophy as Micky Mellon’s side face a trip to the Pirelli Stadium to face Burton Albion.

After Rovers’ last win came in this competition, we will be looking to continue that run in the competition but face a Burton side who are yet to lose in this year’s competition.

Currently sitting 22nd in the third tier, they’ve only lost twice in their last nine games in all competitions and have beaten the likes of Bradford City, Sheffield Wednesday and Leicester City Under 21s to reach the first knockout stage of the competition for the first time.

With Tranmere not having an upcoming fixture this weekend due to most teams being involved in F.A. Cup action, it opens the door for Rovers to go into the small break with a positive result on the road against higher league opposition.

One to Watch: Davis Keillor-Dunn

Born in Sunderland, Davis Keillor-Dunn is a midfielder currently playing at the highest level of his career since turning professional.

After coming through the academy at multiple clubs within the North-East such as Newcastle United, Middlesborough, Sunderland and Gateshead, he eventually turned professional north of the border at Ross County where he made 40 appearances between 2017 and 2019.

Follwing this he then moved back to England with a short spell with Wrexham in 2020 before joining Oldham Athletic in October 2020, originally on a one-year deal.

After seeing the Latics relegated to the National League, he was released by the club and picked up by League One side Burton in June 2022. So far this campaign, Keillor-Dunn has had a decent personal tally for a season which has been far from a success so far for the Brewers, scoring five goals in 16 appearances so far this season.

Manager: Dino Maamria

After beginning his playing career in his home country of Tunisia, Maamria worked his way over to England during his playing days, featuring for the likes of Doncaster Rovers, Southport and Stevenage.

He began his managerial role permanently in 2015/16 with his former club Southport. He remarkably steered the club away from relegation, going on a run that consisted of eight wins in 10 games but unfortunately left for ‘family reasons’.

After working under Graham Westley as assistant manager for a spell with the likes of Stevenage and Preston North End, he went on to have spells as manager of Stevenage and Oldham before joining Burton, originally as assistant to Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

After Hasselbaink resigned in September, Maamria stepped up to be appointed manager and has since struggled in league action to pick up too many positive results. However, after moving towards becoming harder and harder to break down, he will be hopeful his side can build on their positive run of results and pick up another lifting win in midweek.
