Match Preview: Stockport County

1 November 2022

After a disappointing result last time out at Prenton Park against Carlisle United, Micky Mellon’s men will look to build another positive run of results, starting against Stockport County on Tuesday night.

It’s the third of three consecutive home games with Rovers’ last loss ending a run of seven games in Sky Bet League Two without defeat, and with the fourth-tier race for the play-off places being as tight as ever, Rovers sit three points behind 7th placed Carlisle.

As for the visitors, Stockport have had a similar start to the season with just three points separating the two sides ahead of Tuesday night. With four straight wins in a row in all competitions, the Hatters come into the clash full of confidence and hopeful of making it five on the bounce.

Team News:

No fresh injury concerns for Rovers ahead of this one.

One to Watch: Paddy Madden

Very much a success wherever he has played, Paddy Madden has been a threat for Stockport County and at the age of 32, still knows exactly where the net is.

He started out at Irish club Bohemians before moving across to England with Carlisle united.

Once he joined Yeovil Town, the goals began to flow as he joined on loan originally in a spell which saw him score nine goals in 16 appearances before the move was made permanent and he would conclude the season with 23 goals, a League One golden boot award and his side gaining promotion to the Championship.

Successful spells with Scunthorpe United and Fleetwood Town followed, leaving him in Scunthorpe’s top ten all-time top scorers list whilst becoming the highest goal scorer in Fleetwood’s EFL history with 43 goals across his two full seasons.

Signing for Stockport in 2021, he scored seven goals in 15 appearances in his first season before his first full campaign saw him become a Stockport hero as he made 34 goal contributions and boost Stockport back into the Football League after an 11-year absence.

This season, Madden has managed six goals and two assists so far this campaign whilst also becoming the first player since Anthony Elding in 2007 to score in four straight EFL games for Stockport.

Manager: Dave Challinor

A name that will be familiar to many of the SWA, Dave Challinor made over 100 appearances for Rovers as a player after being born in Chester.

His spell at Prenton Park lasted eight years before he moved on for two years at Stockport where he has now managed since 2021. His playing days concluded with over 150 appearances at Bury before he joined Colwyn Bay and eventually became the man in charge.

Challinor then took charge of Lancashire side AFC Fylde where he spent another eight years as a manager before a two-year spell at Hartlepool. After joining Stockport in 2021, Challinor lead County to the National League title as well as a place in the Cheshire Senior Cup final.

With County currently sitting in 14th in the fourth tier, like most teams in this division, if they can put a run together then there’s no reason to rule them out of reaching the top seven come the end of the campaign and with Challinor’s record, there won’t be many ruling Stockport out of a successful year.
